Colon cancer, light micrograph. This is a low-power view of a moderately-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the colon. Adenocarcinoma is a cancer of the glandular lining that is found in many different organs, including the digestive tract. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in North America and Western Europe. It is thought to be connected to a diet high in fat and low in fibre. The normal mucosa is seen in the lower part of the image. The tumour is composed of complex distorted branching glands with copious mucin production. The upper right portion of the image shows residual tubular adenoma.
