Hon. RALPH P. GILBERT. DISTRICT NO. 23. Hon. Ralph P. Gilbert, the first Senatorchosen from the new 23d senatorial district, wasborn in Hebron (Gilead Society), Aug. 30, ancestors were among the earliest and mostprominent settlers of the town, and all of thehighest character and strictest integrity. Gilbert established the first Law Schoolin Eastern Connecticut, and had the training of56 students therein. He served as a member ofthe State Legislature thirty-two sessions, andwas a member of the U. S. Congress in the years1818 and 1819. He was also one of the commit-tee appointed by the Legislature of this State tosell the lands known as the Western Reserve,which brought $1,200,000 ; the interest of whichis used for the support and encouragement of ourcommon schools. His father, Peyton RandolphGilbert, was the senator first elected from the old 21st district, filling the office in 1830 and1831. The subject of our sketch received anexcellent common school education,
