A brief summary of this work follows: Costello (1938) : It takes progressively longer to fragment the eggs as the tem- perature is lowered. Cole (1932) and Harvey (1943) : It takes longer to fragment eggs in hypotonic than in isotonic solutions. Harvey (1945) : Arbacia eggs break less readily in solutions possessing calcium ions than in solutions lacking calcium ions. These treatments (low temperature, hypotonicity and calcium ion) are pre- cisely the ones which favor the development of a cleavage stalk. It is possible that.
