The crickets belong to the femily GryllidcE, and differ from theLocustidcE in that they have the wings laid flat on the back, the fore-wings abruptly bent down at the sides, and, in the female, have the ovipositor cylindrical or needle-like, instead of flattenedor sword-like. This ovipositor usually has a little enlargement, somewhat resembling a spear-head, just before the tip, whichfacilitates placing the ^%^. The males are even greater musiciansthan the Locustidce, the entire wing-covers being modified into a 7 98 AN ECONOMIC ENTOMOLOGY. stridulating organ. Here the sound is produced by the ridgededge of one wing-cover scraping over the ridged veins of theother, setting into vibration the membraneous spaces in bothwings. The ear is situated on the fore-tibia, as in the Locustida. Fig. A sand-cricket, Stenopalmatus species. The mole-crickets are curious, subterranean creatures, withsmall heads and powerful forelegs, developed somewhat like thecorresponding organs in the mole. The larger, more commonspecies belong to the genus Gryllotalpa, and are more frequent Fig. 70.
