One 4-inch charging screw. One 114-inch cleaning screw. Making the Charging and Cleaning Screws. These goods can be readily purchased fromdealers, with the exception of the charging and THE ART OF LEAD BURNING. 27 cleaning screws. They can be made in any brassfoundry. The only difference between the charg-ing and cleaning screws is the size. The charg-ing screw, Fig. 5, should be at least 4 inches in. Pis- 5-—T^^s Charging Screw. diameter, or large enough to pass the handthrough, while the cleaning screw should be i54inches in diameter, or large enough to pass overa I-inch pipe. A piece of sheet lead is fitted intothe cover, as shown at a, to protect the metal fromthe acid. Soft putty is used for a packing, asshown in Fig. 5. The best, although a more expensive, charg-ing screw is shown in Fig. 6. As will be seenfrom the cut, it consists of a base, k; cover, d;clamp, e, and screw, /. The base is simply aplain iron or brass ring, 4 inches in diameter, ^inch thick and i inch high.
