Mr. President and Fellow Members : I will deal principally on growing chrysanthemums for exhibition in greenhouses or under cheese cloth houses, in pots or solid beds. The stock plants are the flrst considera- tion. After the flowers are cut the preceding fall, it is quite a common occurrence for the st^ick plants to be i entirely forgotten until propa- gating time comes around again, es- pecially if they are in beds outside. This is a mistake if blooms of the highest quality are wanted the next fall. After the flowers are cut the plants should be cut to the ground, all old leaves removed and burned, as they are liable to breed fungus diseases. Loosen the top soil and give a dressing of air slacked lime which will sweeten the soil and keep away snails. Soils should never be allowed to dry out, although they will not require nearly as much water as when in active growth. The best time to commence propa- gating in California is considered to be about the first week in March, al- though some commence a month ear- lier with good results, and with some varieties 1 consider advisable to get length of stem. Maud Jeffries and Pockett's Crimson are two notable ex- amples. In taking the cuttings, select the strongest sturdy shoots coming from the base of the plant: never if it can be possibly avoided take any from the old stem, as they almost in- variably make weak plants running to bud after a few weeks. If the grow- er has no propagating house at his command a cold frame is the most suitable place to root the cuttings. Three inches of clean sand tamped hard are sufficient; insert the cuttings moderately close, and give a thorough watering. They must
