In this position he was occupied,exclusively, in writing the official head notesfor the published decisions of the Court,which constituted his employment up tothe time of his removal to Chicago in three years after his fathers death he. MARQUIS EATON devoted five hours each evening and allhis leisure to the study of law. To renderhim eligible for his examination, it wasnecessary that he procure the enactment bythe Michigan legislature of an amendmentto the statute which at that time extendedthe privilege of examinations only to stu-dents in law offices and graduates of univer-sities. The legislation was vindicated bythe circumstance that from a large numberof competitors, he won first place in theensuing examinations.
