Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus London image

Eros monument statue and fountain in Piccadilly Circus London designed by Alfred Gilbert and intended to represent the Angel of Christian Charity not Eros the Greek god of love. It was erected in 1893 as a memorial to the 19th century philanthropist Anthony Ashley Cooper 7th Earl of Shaftesbury and its official name is the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. Gilbert was outraged by suggestions that the figure having just shot an arrow was meant as a visual pun on the words shaft and bury
