(See plate 12, FIGURES f-k.) The second specimen (plates 11 and 12) is equally as distinctive. The spreading tips of the calyx in the bud (plate 12, figures c and d) indicate the pressure of the stigmatic lobes within, and in many of the buds these lobes force their way through the tip some time before anthesis, a feature seldom, if ever, observed in biennis, and favor- ing cross-pollination instead of the close pollination characteristic of biennis. The plant, about 6 dm. tall at maturity, produced flowers, fruit, and seed in great abundance. The leaves were of a slightly darker green than is usual in biennis, and both they and the bracts are.
