Ancient Caledonian Pine forest at Ben Eighe National Nature Reserve, Wester Ross, Scotland.

Ancient Pine forest at Ben Eighe National Nature Reserve. This is the oldest national nature reserve in Scotland and Britain. It was Set up in 1951 and covers an area of 48 square kilometres stretching from loch Maree to the mountain top. There is a visitor centre open from Easter to October just outside Kinlochewe. The three trails which start here are open all year and a further path links the visitor centre with the village of Kinlochewe. The woodland trail explores the ancient pine forest, shown here, which clings to the lower slopes while the mountain trail offers a more demanding hike. The old Caledonian pine forest at one time covered large parts of the Scottish Highlands, before industrialisation and cheaper timber imports reduced its sustainability.
