An unknown man wearing a jacket, vest, and tie. African-American photographer and daguerreotypist Augustus Washington (c. 1820-1875) was born in New Jersey as a free person of colour and immigrated to Liberia in 1852. He is one of the few African-American daguerreotypists whose career has been documented.
