Small sand-dune accumulating in the lee of sea shell oject lying on the inter-tidal beach at St Annes, Fylde Coast, UK

Sand dunes develop where wind blown sand accumulates in the lee of an object, where the wind speed is slowed, causing sand deposition. For a large dune system to develop specialised dune-building grasses, such as marram grass, are needed. This small, temporary dune, has built up at an obstruction (Razor clam shells), slowing the wind, in the inter-tidal zone. The size of this dune is limited by the height of the object.
