The Madison family were amongthe early emigrants to the New World,landing upon the shores of the Chesa-peake l)ul 15 years after the settle-ment of Jamestown. The father oflames Madison was an opulentplanter, residing upon a very fine es-tate called Montjielier, Orange Co.,Va. The mansion was situated inthe niiclst of scenery highly pictur-esque and romantic, on the west sideof South-west Mountain, at the foot ofBlue Ridge.
