A general view of the Bridge on the River Kwai, situated about 140 km west of the capital, Bangkok. Built by the Japanese to create a route between Thailand and Myanmar known as the Death Railway. Over 60,000 allied prisoners built the bridge during the Japanese occupation of Thailand, prisoners perished during the construction. Completed in October 1943, the railway line connects with Thailand's main southern line from Bangkok.
