Girl of Libinza ethnic group with baby learning how to paddle in canoe in swamp forest. Ngiri river area, Democratic Republic of the Congo, central Africa.

The Libinza live in the islands of the Ngiri River, a tributary of the Ubangi, itself a tributary of the Congo River. The Nigiri River is bordered by marshlands surrounded by swamp forest where the women go fishing and collect drinking water, while the men often go on fishing expeditions on the Congo River. This swamp forest is rich in Raffia palm (Raphia sp.) whose sap is fermented to make palm wine. The Libinza speak a language of the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo family.
