PEOPLE do not as a rule care to read introduc-tions, and the present one may be neglectedshould it be thought desirable to do so : the explana-tions contained in it are useful, but not indispensableto the comprehension of what is to follow, and I shallavail myself of the opportunity afforded me to replyto criticisms raised by a preceding volume. Under the title Napoléon Prisonnier, I havealready published the memoirs of Dr. Stokoe, anEnglish surgeon, for some days medical attendant tothe Emperor in exile. The title appears somewhatimposing, compared to the slightness of the memoirsin question. But it seemed to me justified, becauseno facts, perhaps, in the history of Saint Helena showas clearly as those reported by Dr. Stokoe what wasthe treatment inflicted on the vanquished of Waterloo :the inexcusable, the almost incredible rigour of hiscaptivity.
