The 1899 German caption reads: “Martin Luther’s song ‘Ein Feste Burg ist unter Gott’ [‘A Mighty Fortress is our God’] with the composition by Johann Walter. From the reformist’s handwritten Song Book from the year 1530, redone in Otto Kade, ‘The newly discovered Luther’s Codex from the year 1530,’ Dresden 1871.” Luther wrote the words and composed the melody sometime between 1527 and 1529.
