Cooper Island off the South East tip of South Georgia is an important sea bird nesting island as it is rat free. Rats were unwittingly introduced to South Georgia by early whalers. They spread rapidly and had a devastaing impact on nesting sea birds, eating both their eggs and chicks. The South Georgia Trust has an ongoing rat eradication program to try to completely eradicate them.
