He made a spe-cialty of topographical engineering, and was as-sistant professor of mathematics at West Pointuntil tlie beginning of the Civil War, when hecame into active service as lieutenant-colonel ofthe Fifth New York Aolunteers. His promotionwas rapid, and he readied the rank of major-gen-eral of volunteers in May, 1863. He served asbrigade and division commander in the FifthArmy Corps, and in January, 1863, became chieftopographical engineer, and, later, chief engineerof the Army of the Potomac. His service to theUnion cause in defending Little Round Top atGettysburg won him a brevet of colonel in there
