Blue sky view Colorado Rover canyon and discovery tourist raft below Glen Canyon Dam and Route 89 Bridge, near Page, Arizona

The Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch dam on the Colorado River in Northern Arizona, near the town of Page. It was built to provide hydro-electric power and flow regulation from the Upper Colorado to the lower basin of the river, supplying water to the lower basin during years of drought. The dam was started in 1956 and completed, at a cost of $135 million, in 1966. It is 210 m (710 ft) high and 480 m (1560 ft) high. Its reservoir, called Lake Powell, extends upstream into Utah, and is the second largest artificial lake in the USA. The steel arch Glen Canyon Bridge carries US Route 89 across the Colorado River. It is 210 m (700 ft) above the river and 264 m (860 ft) downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam. Construction, at a cost of $4 million, began in 1957 and, at the time of completion in 1959, it was the highest bridge in the world. Colorado River Discovery Tours begin with a ride down the 2-mile long Glen Canyon access tunnel. With the dam soaring above, tourists board motorised pontoon rafts for a guided tour from the Glen Canyon Dam to Lee's Ferry, some 15 miles downstream.
