The museum is dedicated to the events of 28 June 1914 when Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. The assassination is regarded as having triggered the declaration of war of Austria-Hungary against Serbia at the outset of World War One.
