It is a fine example of a bright spiral galaxy seen face-on. It is formed by a small nucleus and well defined spiral arms. Here bright patches of glowing gas & regions of stellar formation are visible. M100 is a member of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. The Virgo cluster is the nearest major cluster of galaxies to our Local Group & lies some 50 million light years away. It consists of about 1000 galaxies over a region 10 million light years wide.
