A Silver Merit Cross 1852 - 1866, Cross of St. George embossed in silver in the form of the Order of the Red Eagle 4th Class, with an obverse medallion depicting an erect, crowned lion representing the Electorate of Hesse striding to the left against a horizontally hatched background. The lower cross arm with stamped maker's signature "HOSSAUER", on the original long, sewn, crimson peacetime ribbon of this award which was originally introduced in 1821.
