The Mayflower Memorial which commemorates the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from Southampton in 1620
The memorial erected in 1913 commemorates the Pilgrim Fathers who commenced their voyage to the “New World” from Southampton, both the Mayflower and Speedwell were at Southampton in 1620. There are various plaques on the monument, one of which records the two million troops who left Southampton in June 1944 for the invasion of Normandy during the Second World War. It is a tall pillar built of shelly fossiliferous limestone, with carved semi-classical heads at the top. The pillar supports a mosaic dome cupola raised on pillars, and at the summit, a small copper ship - the Mayflower - in weathercock style. Designed by R. M. Lucas, a locally active architect, it was built by Messrs. Garret and Haysom in 1913.
