Pretoria is the seat of the legislature,public offices, and law courts, but Johannesburg, the centre of theRand gold-field, is by far the largest and wealthiest town. English isnow spoken by the majority of the inhabitants, but Dutch is still thelanguage generally spoken by the rural population.
