Caesalpinia gilliesii or the Bird of Paradise in flower with developing seed pods

Caesalpinia gilliesii Bird of Paradise Native to southern South America the bird of Paradise is a short lived but very attractive ornamental shrub. It can grow up to three metres high but normally forms a small, irregular shrub. The fernlike leaves are pinnate with tiny leaflets and the yellow flowers have long red stamens. The bird of paradise grows well in the sun or light shade with little water but prefers rich soils. Propagation is from seed or cuttings. The seeds and pods are highly poisonous and a preparation from the roots is used as an abortifacient.
