Aspirin. Packets of tablets that contain aspirin. Aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, is a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is also an analgesic for mild pain and an antipyretic that helps reduce fever. In low doses it can help reduce the risk of heart attack in some patients. Its principal side effects are gastrointestinal ulcers, stomach bleeding and ringing in the ears. First synthesised in 1897, about 40,000 tonnes of aspirin are now consumed each year.
