In 1598 the Earlof Tyrone swept over the new Munster plantation with blood andfire: Spenser and his wife fled for their lives from their burninghouse, leaving behind their baby and perhaps lost books of thegreat epic; and a few months after the poet died in great povertyin London. But he was buried in Westminster Abbey and theEarl of Essex paid the funeral I I
