Conceptual illustration of ocean plastic pollution. The consumption of litter by marine animals is an increasingly pervasive problem. Fish, seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals can become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation and drowning. Tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics are also found in the ocean and are ingested by sea animals, ending up in seafood for humans.
