Venous system. Computer-enhanced illustration of the venous system in the human body, shown in a standing figure. Veins carry deoxygenated and used blood back to the heart from the rest of the body. Unlike arteries, veins rely on valves and muscular body movements to push the blood along, as the pumping effect of the heart is dissipated by the time blood reaches the veins. The average adult has about five litres of blood. At rest this volume of blood passes through the heart and around the body each minute. Original illustration by Andreas Vesalius from his book: \De Humani Corporis Fabrica\" (1543)."
