San Telmo Sunday Market street scene (tango dancers, flower seller, people sitting steps, football school), Buenos Aires
Tango is said to have originated from a mix of African rhythms and Argentine polka music in the second half of the 19th century. It was originally danced in the bars, dance halls and brothels of poorer areas in Buenos Aires by young men in slouch hats, loosely tied neckerchiefs, high-heeled boots and knives tucked casually into their belts. The Argentine tango is danced with the close embrace of tops of bodies and heads touching. The Sunday Market at San Telmo features stalls selling crafts and antiques. Tango dancers entertain the crowds. People at the roadside also sell coca leaves for the making of herbal tea. Here we see young children carrying a bunch at the foot of steps leading to a community football school.
