St James's Palace was the most senior royal palace in the United Kingdom. Located in the City of London. Built by King Henry VIII between 1531 and 1536 in red-brick, on the site of a leper hospital dedicated to Saint James the Less, the palace's architecture is primarily Tudor in style. In 1649 Charles I spent his final night there before his execution. Oliver Cromwell then took it over, and turned it into barracks during the English Commonwealth period.
