Bee culture. 154 Fig. g*^.—Two frame Nucleus. be out of the hive as hhort a time as possible. The wire protector can be used, and Mr. Sladen recom- mends two or three coils to be drawn out and attached to a cross-piece of wire, so that the queen-cell is easily inserted into the nucleus without lifting- out a frame. When queens are kept in nuclei until fertilised and laying, care must be taken that the young queen, on leaving the hive for mating purposes is not accompanied l)y the whole of ihe bees, and si) all be lost. To prexent this, a comb containing un- sealed brcod is, beftuehand, given the bees to take care of, and this keeps them from decamping as stated. I'ecs very seldom desert young brood. Mr. Sladen has recent h' introduced a small hive, holding two frames i Fig. 96), which forms two nuclei for the economical fertilisation of queens. Each frame is hinged in the middle, and will not only hang in an ordinary full-sized hive, but is capable of folding up to make two half- frames (Fig. 9-) for use in the nucleus-hive. The two nuclei are separated by a partition which can be removed when it is desired to unite them. The hive is fitted with a side-wall.
