Germany. He was bornnear Davenport, Iowa, on the 23rd of July, 1840. The family re-moved to Quincy, Illinois, at an early period in his life, and in aprivate school of that city the boy obtained the bulk of his less than twenty years of age Mr. Letton was electedcaptain of a military organization known as the Quincy Cadets. Inthe early part of the Civil war be volunteered for service and was. PUBLIC LI CHICAGO AND COOK COUNTY 1299 appointed first lieutenant of Company C, Fiftieth Illinois a time he served on the staff of General Prentiss, afterward join-ing his regiment and participating in the engagements at Forts Henryand Donelson and Shiloh. After the last named battle he became ad-jutant, serving thus until after the fall of Corinth. He was thendetailed as acting assistant adjutant general of the third brigade,second division, sixteenth army corps, and later held a like positionon the staff of General William Vandever in which latter capacityhe served until the time of service expired. Following the war, Mr. Letton went to Kansas City, Missouri,and in 1871 entered the insurance business as a local agent. Later,he became western manager of the Fire Insurance Association ofEngland, and was afterward appointed United States manager of thesa
