These two verticalgears run loosely on the main horizontal shaft, being held inposition by the bearing and collars, and furnished with anopen clutch on the faces of the hubs opposite each other. Be-tween the two a heavy clutch-head slides over a feather in theshaft, engaging one or the other of the vertical gears accord-ing as it is desired to turn the drum in one direction or theother. The clutch jaws are four in number, each 2f in. deep, and wilh a face so that i in. clearance is given between theback edge and that on the clutch of the gear. This clutch isshifted to and fro by the combination of levers shown in theengraving, the upper end of which projects above the plat-form in the upper story of the plane-house. The shaft upon which these level gears run is of wroughtiron 8 in. in diameter, and turns in boxes 124 in. long. Onone end close to the wall of the building it carries a brake-wheel 8 ft. in diameter, with a face of 5 in. between flanges,. At the other end of the shaftthere is a heavy pinion about 30 in. in diameter, with 23 teethof 4 in. pitch and a face of 15 in. The brake-band that claspsthe wheel is of fin. iron, and is operated by the hand-wheelshown on the upper floor, which turns the worm meshing inwith a worm gear that rotates the tightening shaft of thebrake-band. This brake is used for checking the speed ofthe car on its way down the incline, and for stopping it whenit has reached the proper point beneath the surface of thewater. The pinion at the other end of the shaft meshes into the in-ternal teeth on the winding drum, which is 11 ft. 8 in. indiameter, with a working face of 6 ft. 11 in., in which thereare 31 grooves, each 14 in. deep, and carrying the rope thatis 24; in. in diameter and of steel. This drum is mounted ona cast-iron shaft 11 in. in diameter, swung in heav
