This was the floodlit scene at Kennedy Space Center on the night before Apollo 14's launch. The 400-foot service tower is being rolled back, leaving the three-stage Saturn 5 rocket connected to the launch tower by swing-away arms. Apollo 14 carried Alan B. Shepard, commander, Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot, and Stuart A. Roosa, command-module pilot. It was Shepard and Mitchell who made the third lunar landing on February 5th, 1971, in the Fra Mauro highlands. They set up an automatic scientific station and explored on foot a mile away from the landing module. The astronauts spent 9 hours outside the lunar module and collected 96 pounds of rock samples.
