UNIVAC 1 computer console being operated at a US government research institute. The large console (centre) had a series of switches that were set to address its 1000 words of memory. These were displayed on the console's oscilloscope (centre left). An electric typewriter (lower right) could also be used to direct the machine. Data was stored on magnetic tape drives (background). Photographed at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, California, USA. This site, founded in 1952, would by 1980 be known as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
