We propose to say a few words aboutthe designs of each of these five groups. (i) The designs of the first group are the mostnumerous and most widely applied. A large pro-portion of them obviously are conventionalisedderivatives from animal forms. Of these animalforms the human figure, the dog, and the prawnhave been the originals of the largest number ofpatterns ; the macaque monkey and the large lizard(Varanus) are also traceable. Some designsvaguely suggest a derivation from some animalform, but cannot confidently be assigned to any oneorigin. A few seemed to be derived from vegetableforms; while some few, for example the hook-pattern, seem to be derived from no animal orvegetable form. The hook-pattern seems to besymbolical of conjunction and acquisition in variousspheres. Of all the designs the derivatives from or variantsof the dog are the most numerous and the most.
