Battery Lewis consisted of two 16-inch Navy guns mounted on barbette carriages and was the only 16-inch gun battery in New Jersey. The guns, which fired 2,100 pound armor-piercing projectiles, could reach from offshore Point Pleasant Beach, , to Long Beach, The current 16-inch gun is a surplus Navy Mark 7 gun barrel, the type mounted on Iowa class battleships during World War II. In 1953 the Navesink Military Reservation became the Highlands Air Force Station providing radar coverage. From 1966 to its decommissioning in 1974, the Highlands Army Air Defense Site directed all the New York Defense Area Nike surface-to-air missile sites.
