Automated blood bacteria tests. Blood sample container being barcode-scanned by a laboratory worker. The sample panel will then be placed in the machine for a series of automated tests. This is the Phoenix 100 system, produced by BD Diagnostics. It uses a range of culture media to grow micro-organisms like fungi and bacteria. Sensors detect changes as the micro-organisms form, and the data is processed by computer. This system is designed to test blood. Here, cord blood (stem cells from the umbilical cord) is being tested.
