FIFTH ARMY : ALLIED ATTACK IN THE ANZIO BRIDGEHEAD - Cpl. H. Doubleday of 27 Pant Street, Pontyotmmer, Glam., of "A" Coy., 2nd Bn. Northamptonshires, is a regular soldier with some 12 years service to his credit. He is a trained sniper, and during the attack he was waiting for a target when he noticed a private of the Green Howards lying out in a minefield, with his leg blown off at the knee, and the other leg injured. By his telescope he could see that the man was alive and disregarding enemy shelling and machine gun fire, he took up a bayonet and started to probe his way towards the wounded

He lifted the casualty onto his shoulder and staggered back across the battlefield to a Regimental Aid Post. He then found stretcher bearers to carry the wounded man away to the Advanced Dressing Station. Cpl. Doubleday is seen sitting at the door of his dugout immediately after the attack British Army
