An old engraving stone saw in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This big machine has a wooden frame and a large, circular cutting blade – this is belt driven and could be powered by a steam engine or water power. Adjustments can be made to the blade set-up by the hand-turned wheels and cogs. The stone was pushed through the machine on a sliding platform on rollers. This was done by hand with a long, timber push stick or rod (shown here in the foreground). As this was happening a water pipe (here fed from the right) would ‘lubricate’ the cutting wheel.
