Red figure bobbin A Herakles and Nereus B Pheleus and Thetis, Pistoxenos painter 465BC Athens, Museum, Greek, Greece. . Museum of Cycladic Art Peleus and Thetis . Thetis’ abduction is wonderfully represented by The Pistoxenos Painter: Peleus, wearing a chitoniskos, surprises Thetis grasping the Nereid with his arms. All the details of her agile body emerge under the light cloth of her chiton and himation. A dolphin and a snake are two iconographic symbols attesting Thetis’ divine origin as daughter of the sea god Nereus.

Thetis was a beautiful Nereid who was once courted by both Poseidon and Zeus. It was fated, however, that she would give birth to a son who would be more powerful than his father.
