Light micrograph of human DNA. The DNA strands of various length have been precipitated in alcohol from a suspension of lysed (burst) blood cells. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the material of inheritance of most organisms. Its double-helix structure consists of two strands of nucleotides. A nucleotide consists of 3 subunits: a sugar, a phosphate group & one of four different bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) & cytosine (C).
