After a mature and deliberate investi-1gation they became fully convinced that jtrine immersion was apostolic baptism, jand that faith and repentance were the Iessential prerequisites; accordingly, inthe year 1708, they were immersed, in jthe river JEder, in each of the names of |the Trinity, there covenanting together towalk in all the ordinances and command-ments of the Lord. This little band formed a nucl eus which,by its zeal and deep piety, soon attractedlarge numbers of adherents and the littleorganization increased rapidly, so muchso that the enemy became alarmed and. the result was, they were so severely per-secuted that they were necessitated todisperse in little bands and flee to wher-ever they could enjoy religious they found for a season, in some ofthe provinces of Germany. But the ad-versary still followed their track untilfinally they were obliged to seek shelter inthe new world. In the year 1719 they commenced emi-grating to America and organized theirfirst church at Germantown, Pennsyl-vania. From this small center the doctrine, asbelieved and taught by the Brethren, wentforth and spread until it is now preached—excepting a few of the New England andSouthern states—in every state and terri-tory in the United States, though mostnumerous in Pennsylvania, MarylandVirginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois andIowa, and now have a membership ofover 100, 000.
