This colossal 1500s marble statue of the Roman sea god Neptune (photographed in 1996 before it was cleaned) celebrates naval victories by Tuscany’s ruling Medici family. It stands on the Fonte di Piazza or Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria, Florence Tuscany, Italy. The Late Renaissance or Mannerist fountain was created by artists including Italian architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati and the Flemish sculptor known as Giambologna. It took 13 years to construct, from 1563 to 1575.

It stands surrounded by tritons on the Fonte di Piazza or Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria. The fountain was the work of various artists, including its initial designer, Baccio Bandinelli, architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati and the Flemish sculptor known as Giambologna or Giovanni da Bologna. It took 13 years to construct, from 1563 to 1575, and is in the Mannerist or Late Renaissance style of art and architecture. This is a digital file from a high resolution (4,000 DPI) scan of an image shot on film in October 1996 using a Mamiya 1000S 645 medium format camera. The film used was Fujichrome Provia 100 6cm x (645) colour transparency stock. The scanner used was a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED professional film scanner.
