The bridge at Kylesku carrying the A894 over Caolas Cumhann, by Loch a Chairn Bhain, Northwest Highlands, Sutherland Scotland UK

This prize winning bridge in Northwest Sutherland, designed by the architects Ove Arup & partners, and opened by the Queen in 1984, replaces the ferry between Kylesku and Kylestrome, which previously was the only means by which vehicles travelling on the A894 from Ullapool could continue their journey north. It spans the narrow tidal channel Caolas Cumhann, which links the sea lochs Loch a Chairn Bhain to the west (right) with Lochs Glendhu and Glencoul to the east. On the right hand horizon the pointed cone of the Stack of Glencoul, a site of international geological significance, rises prominently. The bridge is also the boundary between the parish of Eddrachillis to the north and Assynt to the south.
