In spite of this exactness of fit, the couplerswill properly come together and lock, it is claimed, though they may be 3 in. out of alignment, and theyare sufficiently flexible to operate under conditions wherethe car platforms may assume a difference in level of10 in. A lever, located on top of the head where it is readilyaccessible from either side, lifts up and turns through45 deg. to unlock the device. When in the normal posi-tion this handle lies between two lugs on the head whichprotect it from breakage by striking the platform orchains, and this horizontal position of the lever givesmore clearance for the free working of the operating this unlocking device, a special mech-anism holds the coupler unlocked after the lever hasbeen turned through 45 deg., the handle going back tothe normal position when released. This catch on thelocking mechanism is automatically released when the. AUTOMATIC CAR AND AIR COUPLER FOR CITY CARS two couplers part, or (if the coupler has been unlockedwhile not in connection with another car) when theycome together, so that there is no necessity for a manto stand between the cars when coupling or other words, the coupler is always ready to couple-up without attention being given to the locking mech-anism. The lock is complete in each coupler and thusmakes a double lock when two are coupled together, andas long as either one is locked the connection is heldin the same rigid condition. All obstruction to thefree operation of the locking lever is removed byplacing the two air pipes on the underside of the couplerwith the valves just behind the face plate where theyare conveniently located to be reached by the train-man, both from either side. The mechanism is so de-signed that any wear in any part of the mechanism isautomatically taken up as it develops so that the con-nection remains as rigid a
