The cars are finished in mahogany, the headlining beingquartered oak. The seat cushions and backs are covered withrattan. The curtains are of pantasote material and have pinchhandles. Polished plate glass is used throughout the car, exceptthe deck glass, which is ornamental glass. Trimmings are ofbronze. The new features in these cars were suggested by M. Hop-kins, general manager of the South Side Elevated RailroadCompany. -♦♦♦- A RECENT IMPROVEMENT IN FAN CONSTRUCTION Experience has shown that in handling hot gases with a fan,as in a plant producing induced draft for boilers, it is impos-sible to give the fan shaft a suitablebearing at the inlet side. A bearinghere would necessarily be situated inthe inlet area and would be constantlysurrounded by hot flue gases.
