Canyonlands, USA. Satellite image centred on the Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA, showing the evaporation ponds (blue, top) of a potash mine near the city of Moab. Potash (muriate of potash) is a potassium-containing salt that is used widely by farmers in fertiliser. It most often forms in arid regions when inland lakes or seas dry out. As the water evaporates is leaves behind potassium salt deposits that become buried and over geologic time become potash ore. Imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite, on 13th May 2014.
